If you’ve been researching facial rejuvenation, trying to figure out which treatment is right for you, you’ve likely heard of microneedling. Microneedling (also known as collagen-induction therapy) is a method of facial rejuvenation that uses several very fine, very short sterilized needles to puncture the skin, creating micro-traumas and triggering a wound-healing response. This natural reaction to these micro-traumas prompts collagen and elastin production, resulting in fresher, younger-looking skin.

Morpheus8 by InMode is a procedure that takes traditional microneedling and turns it up a notch by combining it with another popular aesthetic treatment: Radio Frequency Therapy (RF).
Like traditional microneedling, Morpheus8 is performed using a handheld device that quickly pricks the skin with microscopic needles; the 24 microneedles enter the skin to a depth of 4mm. The biggest difference between Morpheus8 and standard microneedling is the addition of RF, which is usually applied to the top of the skin. RF is emitted through the needles and into the skin as they penetrate, causing the dermal layers to heat and tighten. The combination of these two popular procedures bolsters the results of each, with the needles creating a more direct pathway for RF into the skin–ensuring none of the electric current is lost in the top layers–and RF, in turn, boosting the response to the needles’ microtraumas, promoting a quicker and more abundant collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid response than needles alone. This response creates faster and more dramatic results and usually requires fewer follow-up sessions than standard microneedling.
The benefit of Morpheus8 over other RF Microneedling procedures is that the depth of RF heat penetration is customizable, allowing different depths of dermal layers to be reached, enabling your provider to adjust the depth depending on your skin condition and concerns.
Though Morpheus8 is most commonly used as a facial rejuvenation, it can be used on any part of the body where signs of aging and other conditions are present, the most popular area being under the chin. This area is notoriously difficult to treat non-surgically and Morpheus8 has achieved excellent results.

Morpheus8 is an outpatient procedure performed at your doctor’s office. About an hour prior to the treatment, numbing cream is applied, and the procedure itself takes about 10-60 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.
Immediately after your procedure, the treatment area will be red and swollen. In the days following, you will be instructed to keep the area dry and to not apply any lotions or skincare, though a 30+ broad-spectrum SPF is permitted and recommended on day two. Your skin will be red and patchy, and there may be some slight scabbing, but this should all subside within one to three days.
Compared to other procedures, recovery from Morpheus8 is very easy; you will only need to rest for a day or two before you will be able to return to normal activity. If you have your procedure on Friday, you will be ready to go back to work on Monday!
You may feel some slight burning during your procedure, but the numbing agent will assist in reducing any discomfort. If you have sensitive skin or are susceptible to pain, you can talk to your provider about other anesthetic options.
This is entirely dependent on the patient, the severity of symptoms, and the size of the area being treated. Most providers recommend 2-6 sessions, spaced 6-8 weeks apart but this is dependent on the condition of your skin and the size of the treatment area.
Some patients see immediate results, such as improved skin tone and texture. New collagen and elastin, however, take time to develop so you will not see final results until three to six months after your last treatment.
Results from Morpheus8–or any microneedling procedure–are not permanent. Your results will usually last for up to one year after which you will need to schedule an annual follow-up treatment to maintain the benefits of improved collagen production.
Risks and complications with microneedling procedures are very slim, especially in experienced hands. The addition of RF does increase risks slightly, due to the heating of the skin, but even still, these risks are low. Because the treatment creates controlled microdamage, the potential for permanent or long-term damage to the skin is minimal.
