Face Lift

As we age, the effects of gravity, exposure to the sun, and the stresses of daily life can take a toll on our faces. Deep creases can form between the nose and mouth, the jawline can become slack and jowly, and folds and fat deposits can appear around the neck. A facelift, also known as a rhytidectomy, can help counteract these effects and restore a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance.

Face Lift, which is usually combined with a Neck Lift, is a surgical procedure that involves elevating and tightening the deeper tissues of the face and muscles of the neck to create a smoother, more youthful face and neck contour. Occasionally facial implants, such as a chin implant, may be recommended to improve natural deficiencies in the bony anatomy that would otherwise limit your ideal results.

Dr. Amadi’s goal is to achieve a natural surgical result that will leave you looking and feeling like a more youthful and rested version of yourself. While utilizing the most modern deep plane face and neck lifting techniques, Dr. Amadi avoids the dreaded “wind tunnel” face lift results that plagued older techniques….remember Joan Rivers??? His emphasis on pre-operative education will help you understand the surgical procedure, its risks/complications, as well as limitations on what can be achieved naturally. With that underlying foundation, you will be able to confidently make an informed decision on what is right for you.

“SMAS” & “Deep Plane” face and neck lifts

SMAS stands for Superficial Musculo Apnuerotic System and refers to the deep “fibroadipose” layer of the face that connects the facial muscles to the subcutaneous fat and skin. A SMAS lift gives patients a natural and longer-lasting result, lifting and tightening the fatty fascia layer overlying the facial muscles of the mid-to-lower face and neck. During this type of facelift, incisions are camouflage well in the recesses in front of the ears, around the earlobes and to the back of the ears, and extending into the hairline behind the ears. The incisions are fashioned such that they are virtually impossible to see unless one is actively looking for them. The skin and subcutaneous fat is then lifted off of the SMAS, tightened and repositioned, then redraped in a way that complements the contours of the face; sometimes excess tissue is trimmed where necessary before the incisions are closed.

A deep plane facelift is a type of SMAS lift. The main difference between the two procedures is that an SMAS lift treats the SMAS and skin as separate units, lifting the skin off of the SMAS whereas a deep plane lift treats them as one, lifting them together and then conducting the procedure at a deeper tissue level. A deep plane facelift almost always includes the neck because of their close connection.

At Amadi Aesthetics, Dr. Amadi’s preferred approach is an extended deep plane face and neck lift, a technique developed by Dr. Andrew Jacono. What defines this procedure are the natural-looking results. In a traditional or SMAS lift, increased tension is placed on the facial skin which produces the taut or “pulled” look often associated with cosmetic surgery. An extended deep plane face and neck lift adjusts and repositions the tissues beneath the SMAS, restoring them to their former natural positions without straining the skin or muscles, resulting in a more comprehensive, natural-looking appearance. This technique lifts cheeks, restores lost mid-face volume, and eliminates the appearance of jowls; it also addresses sagging, banding and excess skin in the neck. Not only does this procedure offer a natural-looking, decades-younger appearance, the results can last between 10-15 years, whereas other procedures often need to be “revised” within a few years. It is important to note that any facelift procedure does not stop the natural aging process, though due to its longevity, it is considered “permanent.”

Improved appearance: Face Lift surgery can restore a more youthful and refreshed appearance by reducing sagging skin, deep creases, and jowls. Patients often report feeling more confident and satisfied with their overall appearance after the procedure.

Long-lasting results: While Face Lift surgery does not stop the aging process, the results of the procedure can last for several years. Patients can maintain their results with proper skincare and a healthy lifestyle.

Customizable: Face Lift surgery can be customized to meet the unique needs of each patient. Dr Amadi will tailor the procedure to address specific concerns and achieve your desired results.

Minimal scarring: While there will be some scarring after the procedure, the incisions are typically well-hidden around the hairline and ear area. Over time, the scars will fade and become less noticeable.

In addition to improving the appearance of the face and neck, Face Lift surgery can also improve facial symmetry and balance, enhance facial contours, and address other aesthetic concerns.

Face Lift FAQ

Who is a good candidate for Face Lift surgery?

Face Lift surgery is typically recommended for individuals who are bothered by the signs of aging on their face and neck, such as sagging skin, deep creases, and jowls. The procedure can be customized to meet the unique needs of each patient, so it’s important to discuss your goals and expectations with Dr. Amadi during your initial consultation. Most patients are “ready” for a face lift in their late 40’s or early 50’s, but it is the anatomy that will dictate whether you are a good candidate for a face and neck lift.

What happens during Face Lift surgery?

During the procedure, Dr Amadi will make incisions around the hairline and ear area to access the underlying facial muscles and tissues. Excess skin will be removed, and the remaining skin will be tightened to restore a more youthful appearance. In some cases, fat grafting or filler injections may also be used to enhance facial contours and volume.

What is the recovery like after Face Lift surgery?

Recovery time can vary depending on the extent of the procedure and the individual patient’s healing process. Patients may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort for several days after surgery, but these symptoms can be managed with pain medication and proper post-operative care. It’s important to follow Dr. Amadi”s instructions carefully to ensure optimal healing and results.

Are there any risks or complications associated with Face Lift surgery?

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks and complications associated with Face Lift surgery. These may include bleeding, infection, scarring, nerve damage, and asymmetry. However, these risks can be minimized by choosing a board-certified surgeon with extensive experience performing Face Lift surgeries, like Dr Amadi.
